Sister Love

So I am home at my mother’s place with my mother and brother for the weekend.

My sister has gone away with her husband and the baby for a while.

I miss her. This house is big and airy and a wonderful place to unwind. If she was here we’d be chatting constantly about this and that while she goes about her business.

Since she is not here, I decided it would be fun if I went through her stuff! Gasp ! Nooo Sachi , why would you dooo that !?! Oh well. She has pretty stuff OK?

In any case, when I am here, I browse through my mother’s old Talbot’s or her vintage button collection. It’s very therapeutic . My sister also has a pretty collection of threads and fabrics I love looking at.

Today when I started browsing aimlessly through some boxes full of pretty colored thread, I wasn’t expecting to find a treasure box full of hand made jewelry she seems to have abandoned, but that’s exactly what I found. She crochets a lot and all of these are made with crocheted thread and pretty beads.

Imagine my happiness.

I picked out my favorites to show you guys.

Enjoy !

Week 9 & 10

It’s mid morning. I had trouble sleeping for a few nights at a stretch. I fall asleep next to my mother now afraid she might throw up in the middle of the night.

Tears run down her cheeks while being violently sick, she keeps a hand to her chest. I hold her hair back. My husband runs back and forth fetching water and towels. All that she empties into a bucket is tainted red with the medicine she takes. It scared me at first but the doctors said it’s just the color of the meds.

Thankfully, out of three anti vomit tablets, one worked, so she’s able to sleep peacefully at night.

I am emotionally dependant on Darling. While that makes me a bit uncomfortable, he’s been my silver lining, and I realise how blessed I am to be with him. He’s been an amazing friend,  and an extraordinary human being. His kindness in this time of need has been the only thing that’s kept me going. There have been many, many kind people , kinder than I could have ever imagined before this episode of troubles , but his silent presence, his unpretentiousness amazes me every day.

So let this post be a dedication to him and everyone else who were kind to us during a difficult time.

Walk with me..

It’s not everyday when we get to hold hands and walk on the road together , but when we do, you can rest assured that I will make a whole photo shoot out of it !

: )

Our car’s broken hence the walking.

We set off, and the first two people we see are fish sellers. Two people selling fish the old fashioned way, on foot.

Then we encounter a little truck with a little banner that says they’ll come right to your doorstep and polish your brassware. They are stationed in front of a neighbor’s house with all their traditional brassware out on the side of the road with water and soap and some kind  of machine that make the items shine ! Smaaaaile ! 😀

No.

Then off to Darling’s aunt’s house.

This house. It fascinates me. And I realise that when a house is lived in for so long, it acquires certain qualities, that makes it immensely romantic to look at. I loved their house and their quirky windows and all the vintage things I could see in the house.

I am fascinated by other people’s homes. :S

I love the house we live in ( Thank you FIL for making a dream come true ) but we’ve only lived in it for such a short time , everything I do to decorate it, looks actually brand new. Even if my style is old fashioned, I still can’t muster the effortless charm that comes naturally with living in one place for far too long.  I worry about things like time, when there won’t be any left of it and I would not get to do what I want to do to complete the dream that is the house we live in. But I digress. Here are some photos I shared on instagram from our visit.

Enjoy!

Never the same thing

Since I haven’t posted in the ‘food blogs’ of late, here are some breakfast pics .

We try to add variety to our breakfasts simply because that’s just the kind of thing I like to fuss about.

It’s so strange .

I’ve hated breakfast since I was small and continued to hate it well into my twenties. Oh but with a kitchen door that lets in so much of morning light ( Thank you FIL ) and someone charming to share breakfasts with, who cares if I eat or not. So I eat.

( They say 30% of your meal should be made up of fruits. Don’t know about the 30%, but we try. )

Lazy Cooking

Am I lazy? Of course I am.

But in the kitchen, while cooking, my inner monologues sort of go away and I feel like I am in my element.

Not the case when I am baking.

Sigh.

Baking is difficult. Before marriage , I had baked only once or twice, having big time bakers for a mother and a sister made it easy for me not to. I never had any need to.

Now I do. Now that I have our own kitchen with our own supplies, I feel like I could bake all the time.

Except that I am scared to.

I first baked cup cakes last month for my sister’s baby shower. While they would have never passed the cute test, they came out perfect. Moist, not too sweet and very chocolaty. But my sister guided me through the process.

On 20th Jan, a Sunday , I made a simple lunch, pictures to follow, and tried my hand at baking muffins from a baker’s mix which I had picked up from Keels a couple of nights earlier. My thoughts were that I could start easy and simple and proceed from there.

Well, didn’t they turned out awesome!

The recipe only called for vegetable oil and eggs. I added chopped up cashews , raisins and some chopped up Cadbury chocolate.

That aunt

Well, hello to you too ! :)

Well, hello to you too ! 🙂

I am going to be that aunt. That aunt who is always throwing baby parties and whisking the baby away for picnics and always lounging  in the garden with the baby and always going to the beach , making dream catchers for the baby and telling the baby cool stories about growing up with his mother and reading bed time stories other than Noddy and introducing flowers and when the baby grows up he will know me as the cool aunt . The aunt who always has something up her sleeve just for the baby.  The aunt who winks at the baby when his mother is mad at him or being over protective. The best aunt in the world. That’s my new role. Aunt. I’ve got to be good at it. I have to be excellent !  The baby is going to look up to me and  ask zillion questions. I have to be ready.

For now, the baby is asleep , and his mother AND the grand mother .

I, the aunt, am sitting in a corner in the hospital room trying to work, trying not to get too excited when the baby sniffles.

He’s a little miracle that one.

Between breakfast and lunch

well, nothing happened, but here are my breakfast and lunch pictures from Sunday the 13th Jan. ( This is bound to get tedious at some point. For you AND me. )

I made pol rotti for breakfast which is a rotti made with scraped coconut and flour. You can find the recipe here. And we ate it with butter, chillie paste and a bit of cheese. Usually, we’d eat it the traditional way. With ‘Lunu Miris’. ( A paste made from chopping onions together with chillie powder, kosher salt, green chilies if you want. Add some lime juice after chopping and mix well ) .

Made a simple lunch since  we were doing our weekly grocery shopping .
